New for 2023: Video for 1992

1972: At 914 Sound Studios in New York, Bruce records “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City.”

1974: A scheduled E Street Band gig in Memphis is cancelled.

1978: Bruce plays his first ever concert in British Columbia when he and the E Street Band bring the Darkness Tour to Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theater.

1982: Bruce joins Billy Chinnock on stage at Big Man’s West for “Lucille.”

1992: The Long Goodbye” makes its world debut at Night Two in Frankfurt, along with the tour premieres of “Dancing in the Dark” and “Follow That Dream.”

1993: Bruce plays a full-length concert at Madison Square Garden to benefit the new Kristen Ann Carr Fund. This show serves as an epilogue to World Tour 1993 and is the last appearance of the 1992-1993 touring band. Joe Ely, Soozie Tyrell, and Terrence Trent D’Arby all make guest appearances, but D’Arby’s contribution is not appreciated by fans in attendance, who boo him so noticeably that Bruce, visibly peeved, tells off the crowd.

1999: “Who’ll Stop the Rain” makes its tour debut to open a Reunion show on a rainy night at Copenhagen’s outdoor Parken Stadium. “Because the Night” tour debuts later in the set as well.

2000: Night Seven (of ten) at the Reunion Tour’s closing stand at Madison Square Garden is most notable for its sound check, where director Jonathan Demme films the band performing “American Skin (41 Shots).”

2013: Bruce and the E Street Band play a stellar Wrecking Ball show in Gijon, Spain, featuring the tour premiere of “Travelin’ Band” and a rare performance of “Ain’t Good Enough for You.” For more highlights from this show, see my Where the Band Was report for this show.

2021: Springsteen on Broadway returns for a limited engagement at the St. James Theater in New York, reopening Broadway after more than a year of closure during the Great Pandemic. New stories and songs have been added, including “Fire,” “American Skin (41 Shots),” and “I’ll See You in My Dreams.” In attendance tonight: Steven Van Zandt, Jon Landau, Governor Phil Murphy, Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Ridley Scott, Brian Williams, David Fricke, George Travis, and this blogger. See how many you can spot in this photo I took just before the house lights went down.

  1. Ken, I spot Sec. of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Gov. Phil Murphy, Jon Landau, Steven and David Fricke (to Steven’s right?). Cannot put a name to a face of the rest. (Is that Brian Williams with a pen in his mouth?)
