New for 2023: Audio for 1981
1969: Child plays several sets at the Pandemonium in Wanamassa, New Jersey.
1978: Before his Darkness show at the Sam Houston Coliseum, Bruce Stops by Houston radio station KILT-FM for a wide-ranging interview. Of particular interest are the interviewer’s probing questions on Bruce’s attitude towards women and Bruce’s discomfort with the questions.
(Note: Brucebase says that the interview is with Ed Beauchamp, but unless Ed developed a British accent for the occasion, I don’t believe that’s him doing the interviewing. If anyone knows who it is, please let me know.)
That evening, Bruce and the E Street Band perform “The Promise” during their show. It won’t be performed again for more than two decades.
1981: It’s Night Two of a five-night River Tour stand at the Philadelphia Spectrum.
1984: Bruce and the E Street Band kick off a three-night Born in the U.S.A. Tour stand at the Rosemont Horizon near Chicago.
1989: Bruce makes a guest appearance with X-Men at T-Birds Cafe in Asbury Park.
1999: Bruce and the E Street Band kick off the U.S. leg of the Reunion Tour with the first of fifteen(!) shows at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford. The anticipation and build-up to this show is intense, and VH1 broadcasts the first couple of songs. Kicking off the encores, Bruce plays “Freehold” for only the second time in the U.S.
2003: Bruce and the E Street Band kick off the final leg of the Rising Tour with the first of a ten-night stand at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford. The sets will be relatively standard at first, legendary by the end. Similar to the kick-off of the U.S. Reunion Tour exactly four years prior to the day, public attention and news coverage is intense. Check out some of it below, including a special episode of Tailgate Party marking the occasion.
2008: The final European leg of the Magic Tour enters the home stretch with a final run of shows in Spain, starting with a night in San Sebastian. Bruce opens with “Tunnel of Love,” and the set list features a rare “Incident on 57th Street” as well.
Meanwhile, Bruce releases a new live EP entitled Magic Tour Highlights, featuring notable guest appearances and Danny Federici’s final performance with the band. The EP is a benefit fund-raiser for the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund.
2020: E Street Radio debuts “Summertime, Summertime,” the eighth installment of Bruce’s From My Home to Yours radio show.
2021: Springsteen on Broadway continues its limited return engagement at the St. James Theater in New York City. In attendance tonight: Pamela Springsteen.
