New for 2023: Audio for 1988, 2012 and 2021
1974: Bruce and the E Street Band play their third of three nights at The Bottom Line in New York City.
1978: Bruce and the E Street Band continue their Texas swing, as the Darkness Tour arrives for a night in San Antonio (Bruce’s one and only performance in that city). By request, Bruce tour premieres “The Fever.”
1988: Bruce and the E Street Band bring the Tunnel of Love Tour to St. Jakob Stadion in Basel, Switzerland. The show is filmed professionally and is a delight to watch. Check out the encores below, including the only performance of “Follow That Dream” on the tour.
1999: Bruce and the E Street Band play a warm-up set for the first U.S. leg of the Reunion Tour at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford.
2002: The New York Times publishes an article on Bruce’s upcoming album, The Rising, In his article, Jon Pareles quotes frequently from the interview he conducted with Bruce to inform it, but you can hear the interview itself below.
2005: Bruce kicks off the encores at his solo acoustic show in Toronto with the tour premiere of “Darlington County.”
2009: “Pink Cadillac” makes a welcome return after a six-year absence at Bruce’s Working on a Dream show in Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
2012: Bruce and the E Street Band headline Hard Rock Calling in London’s Hyde Park on what will prove to be an eventful day, and a highly anticipated one:
It starts with a surprise guest appearance by Bruce during John Fogerty’s set:
…and things pick up during Bruce’s set: Bruce and Roy open by themselves, playing “Thunder Road” like they did at Bruce’s legendary Hammersmith Odeon show in 1975.
Guest appearances by Tom Morello and John Fogerty quickly follow, along with the tour premiere of the very rare “Take ‘Em as They Come.”
But it’s the encore surprise that garners worldwide headlines, when Bruce invites Sir Paul McCartney to join him on stage for “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Twist and Shout.”
Unfortunately, and mystifyingly, the festival staff pull the plug on Bruce, Paul, and the band when they sail past their 10:30pm curfew. Unable to close the show in his customary fashion, Bruce merely sings a brief “Goodnight Irene” and exits. (The broadcast clip above ends before the power cut, but you can watch the unedited footage below to see how it played out.)
Over the days and weeks that follow, the incident will become legendary.
2018: Springsteen on Broadway continues its theatrical run at the Walter Kerr Theater in New York City.
2021: BBC Radio 2 airs Zoe Ball’s interview with Bruce, while in New York City Springsteen on Broadway continues its limited return engagement at The St. James Theater. In attendance tonight: Garry Tallent.
