New for 2023: Audio for 1967
1967: The Castiles play two cover sets at the grand opening of The Left Foot, a short-lived teen club based in the rec center of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Freehold. One of the songs played tonight–a cover of Willie Dixon’s “You Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover” will eventually become an official release on Chapter and Verse almost 50 years later. The set also includes covers of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” and The Yardbirds’ “Jeff’s Boogie” that showcases just how accomplished on the guitar Bruce had already become by age eighteen.
1973: Bruce cancels a scheduled gig at Syracuse University to make room for final mixing on The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle.
1975: The Born to Run Tour’s Texas swing concludes with a show at the Dallas Convention Center Theater. (Soundcheck photo credit: Barbara Pyle)
1978: Bruce and the E Street Band continue their three-night Darkness Tour stand at the Palladium in New York City. This show features the first full-band “Independence Day,” a work-in-progress “Point Blank,” and the tour debut of “Incident on 57th Street” — a pretty great combination for those lucky enough to be there. After the show, the band sits down for an interview with local WNEW DJ Vin Scelsa, which will be broadcast three days later.
1987: Bruce serves as best man and the E Street Band plays at Danny Federici’s wedding reception.
1996: The Ghost of Tom Joad Tour resumes after a four-month break, kicking off the fall leg with a show at Benedum Center in Pittsburgh, where Joe Grushecky makes an appearance during the encores. Bruce and Joe perform “Homestead” together.
1999: A hurricane forces the postponement of a scheduled Reunion Tour show in Philadelphia.
2003: Bruce and the E Street Band play their first of two Hartford stadium shows at Rentschler Field, opening with an acoustic “The Ghost of Tom Joad.” The first E Street Band performance of “Leap of Faith” and a rare “Human Touch” make it clear that Bruce is re-discovering his missing years, but he’s still discovering his latest as well, playing “Let’s Be Friends (Skin to Skin)” for the first and only time to date.
2004: The Castiles get their first radio airplay when recordings of their 1967 performances at The Left Foot are played on NPR.
2009: In Greenville, South Carolina, Bruce and the E Street Band tour premiere “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Double Shot (of My Baby’s Love),” performing the latter with The Swingin’ Medallions themselves. Jay Weinberg helms the drums for the entire show–the last time he’ll do that on this tour.
2013: While Bruce was in Buenos Aires for a show a few days earlier, he learned a Spanish language song that he’d intended to perform there: León Gieco’s “Sólo le Pido a Dios.” He didn’t quite get it down in time, so instead he had himself filmed and uploads it to YouTube today.
2020: Bruce bids farewell to the Summer of 2020 with “Summer’s End,” the twelfth installment of his From My Home to Yours radio show on E Street Radio.
