New for 2023: Audio for 1981, 2002, and 2008
1966: The Castiles co-headline with The Rogues at the Surf ‘n’ See Club in Sea Bright, New Jersey.
1973: Bruce and the E Street Band play their second night of a week-long residency at Oliver’s in Boston.
1975: Bruce opens a three-night stand at Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom in Atlanta.
1976: Bruce, the E Street Band, and the Miami Horns bring the Lawsuit Tour to the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Connecticut.
1978: Bruce and the boys kick off a three-night Darkness Tour stand at Madison Square Garden. Before the show, Bruce sits down for an interview with Joel Siegel (it will air the following night).
1981: At the second of six nights at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena on the River Tour, Flo and Eddie guest-star on “Hungry Heart.” (They also provided backing vocals on the original album track.)
1985: At the third of a four-night Giants Stadium stand (there will be two more later in the summer), “Bobby Jean” is recorded and eventually released on Live 1975-85.
1987: Bruce and Stevie share a stage again, when Bruce joins Steve and The Disciples of Soul at their Stone Pony gig for “Native American” and “Sun City.”
1988: Bruce joins Cats on a Smooth Surface on stage at The Stone Pony for “Stand By Me” and “Around and Around.” (Photo credit: Debra Rothenberg)
1990: The River is certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
1992: Bruce and his 1992-93 touring band bring World Tour 1992 to the Richfield Coliseum for the first of two nights.
1999: Bruce and the reunited E Street Band kick off a five-night Boston stand at the Fleet Center.
2002: Bruce debuts the modern-day rock arrangement of “Dancing in the Dark” at his Rising Tour show in Tacoma. It will be an E Street Band tour staple ever after. Also tour premiering at this show: “Ramrod.” For more highlights from this show, see my Where the Band Was report.
2008: Bruce takes a Magic Tour victory lap this week, with each show bringing its own share of surprises and rarities. Tonight’s show in Nashville features the first “Good Rockin’ Tonight” in 28 years, a rare “Held Up Without a Gun” and “Loose Ends,” and a tour premiere cover of “I Fought the Law.” Marah’s Dave Bielanko joins the band when Rosie comes out in the encores.
2018: Bruce and his daughter Jessica appear together on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar.
2020: Bruce sends a pre-recorded birthday video for a Save Our Stages benefit in honor of Joe Strummer.
2021: Bruce is scheduled to perform “Because the Night” with Patti Smith at Clive Davis’ We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert, a post-COVID (we thought) celebration of the return of “normal.” A storm builds, however, and the event is cancelled before Bruce and Patti are able to take the stage.
