No one quite knows where “When The Saints Go Marching In” came from. Like many folk songs, it’s origins and earliest days are murky and multi-threaded. But the earliest known recording dates back to 1923 by the Paramount Jubillee Singers.

“The Saints” surfaced several times throughout the 1920s in gospel arrangements, but when Louis Armstrong recorded it in 1938, “When The Saints Go Marching In” became permanently ensconced as a jazz standard and unofficial song of New Orleans.

(My hometown of Philadelphia can lay a claim to it as well. My early memories include watching The Mummers perform “When The Saints Go Marching In” every New Years Day. Growing up, I actually thought it originated with and belonged to The Mummers.)

Over the years, it’s been covered countless times in myriad arrangements and genres. When Bruce was invited to play the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with the Sessions Band in 2006, he knew “The Saints” was a lock for his Americana set list, but which version to choose?

Researching the song, Bruce discovered that like much of folk music “The Saints” doesn’t really have an “official” set of lyrics. In fact, its simple structure almost guarantees musical mutation. But Bruce stumbled across an early set of lyrics that he’d never heard before but which spoke to him:

Oh when the new world is revealed
Oh when the new world is revealed
Yeah I want to be there on that morning
When the new world is revealed

“When The Saints Go Marching In” is fatalistic (if not apocalyptic), but these new lyrics promised redemption and rewarded hope. Bruce embraced these lyrics and worked up a quiet, almost reverent arrangement–and when the band was ready for its last JazzFest encore, this is what they played.

Introducing the song, Bruce admitted it was intimidating to play “The Saints” in New Orleans–what could he bring to the song to make it fresh and relevant? For a city still reeling from the impact of Hurricane Katrina, Bruce’s gentle arrangement was the perfect medicine.

Bruce’s warm vocals comforted, and Marc Anthony Thompson (whose nightly contributions were the highlight of a tour filled with highlights) intertwined with Bruce like they’d been singing together their whole lives. The crowd had undoubtedly heard the song more times than they could remember and more frequently than they would have wished for. But they hadn’t heard it this way, and they received it with enthusiastic appreciation.

“When the Saints Go Marching In” went over so well at JazzFest that Bruce kept it in the set list throughout the entire tour, playing it 60 times that year–and when Bruce released a tour document in the form of Live in Dublin, “When The Saints Go Marching In” was enshrined as an official release.

Bruce retired “The Saints” after the Seeger Sessions Tour, reprising it only during return visits to Jazz Fest in 2012 and 2014. Those later E Street Band versions are serviceable, but they don’t match the grace or beauty of the Sessions Band’s version.

Many Sessions Band songs and arrangements have translated successfully to the E Street stage, but Bruce’s cover of “When the Saints Go Marching In” was alchemical–a blend of content, context, and players that isn’t likely to come again.

But we’ll always have 2006. And when we need a little hope and solace, we could do worse than turn to “The Saints.”
