{"id":970,"date":"2018-03-06T05:00:10","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T13:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/?p=970"},"modified":"2022-12-27T22:09:01","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T06:09:01","slug":"roll-of-the-dice-santa-ana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/06\/roll-of-the-dice-santa-ana\/","title":{"rendered":"Roll of the Dice: Santa Ana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Santa Ana&#8221; is typical early-Bruce tapestry&#8211;full of larger-than-life characters, colorful metaphors, and some liberal dips into the rhyming dictionary a la &#8220;Blinded by the Light.&#8221; Written in 1972 and recorded in early 1973, it wouldn&#8217;t see the light of day (officially, anyway) for a full quarter century thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not much in the way of plot in &#8220;Santa Ana&#8221;&#8211;as Bruce said in a 1998 interview for Mojo, &#8220;Santa Ana is just a series of images, but it works.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M0V18vfvQh8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>At a 1973 show in Bryn Mawr, PA, Bruce recounted the origin of the song, born out of a road trip to Mexico with his father (which he would later recount in his autobiography). Listen to the story below.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W4Ge8ShsyEI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The lyrics are a series of streetscapes&#8211;the first from above, as a boy watches a parade featuring Daniel Webster, Robert Oppenheimer, Sam Houston, and more&#8211;but wonders whence Santa Anna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>From the tin rooftop the little boy did watch the procession down through town<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Through the museum where Daniel whupped the Devil with them boys from the underground<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Where the Giants of Science fight for tight control over the wildlands of New Mexico<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Sam Houston&#8217;s ghost&#8217;s in Texas fighting for his soul<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And the townsfolk rest uneasy beneath the guns of Kid Cole (ahhhh)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And the kid says, &#8220;Hey, where is Santa Ana?&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He who could romance the dumb into talking<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Take a chance with me tonight, my contessa<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If it don&#8217;t work out I ain&#8217;t lame, I can walk, hey!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The second verse is grittier and streetier, with imagery reminiscent of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/09\/roll-of-the-dice-hollywood-kids\/\">Hollywood Kids<\/a>&#8221; from the same period. It didn&#8217;t make the cut, but it did make a 1974 UK promotional acetate, and from there into the land of bootleggers, where &#8220;Santa Ana&#8221; roamed free until a later take was released officially as part of the <em>Tracks<\/em> box set in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to compare the bootleg version with the released version from\u00a0<em>Tracks.\u00a0<\/em>The official version (at the top of this post) is a rare snapshot of the early E Street Band, including backing vocals from Suki Lahav, and David Sancious on piano.<\/p>\n<p>The bootleg version&#8211;an earlier take of the song&#8211;uses the same vocal performance with a pared-down instrumental accompaniment. It&#8217;s simpler, looser, and features a prominent performance by Clarence Clemons&#8211;on the flute! (Clarence&#8217;s contribution would be dropped from the released track.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tRjpRM4rVgQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>In concert, &#8220;Santa Ana&#8221; has been performed very few times&#8211;that we know of. There are four known performances from 1974 (including the one earlier in this post), but Bruce claims to have performed it often during the early years. As there are many early gigs without recorded setlists, it&#8217;s entirely possible he&#8217;s right, but Bruce is also known to have a fuzzy memory about the history of his more obscure songs (as illustrated below, when &#8220;Santa Ana&#8221; returned to the stage after a 32-year absence).<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/weWzFj8sPBQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Bruce rescued &#8220;Santa Ana&#8221; from obscurity in 2005 for five performances, and then promptly returned it from whence it came.
