During the early days of the Steel Mill era, Bruce and the band were known to close their shows with an extended band showcase called “Goin’ Down Slow.”

Originally assumed by some to be the much-covered blues standard by the same name, a surviving bootleg recording reveals it to be an entirely new and original lyrical work (although the bluesy arrangement appears to be at least inspired by if not an homage to its namesake).

Still, it’s not the lyrics that make the song notable, nor frankly is it the band’s overall performance–in this performance from The Matrix in San Francisco from January 13, 1970, they lack cohesion at times and struggle with tempo occasionally. But as young musicians, there’s remarkable talent on display.

In particular, pay attention to Danny Federici’s keyboards; you won’t have to wait long, as Danny is immediately up front and prominent in the mix, and he is an absolute force of nature here.
