{"id":3569,"date":"2015-03-17T11:00:51","date_gmt":"2015-03-17T18:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/?p=3569"},"modified":"2026-07-22T07:55:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T14:55:15","slug":"roll-of-the-dice-cover-me-trapped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2015\/03\/17\/roll-of-the-dice-cover-me-trapped\/","title":{"rendered":"Trapped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a sub-genre of Springsteen staples that are simultaneously covers and not-quite-covers, and\u00a0 &#8220;Trapped&#8221; is one of the best-known and most-loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>On the European leg of the original River Tour, Bruce walked into an airport duty-free store in Amsterdam, picked up a Jimmy Cliff cassette and was knocked out by a particular song that&#8211;much like some of Bruce&#8217;s best work&#8211;paired an optimistic, upbeat melody with more sober lyrics.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vCgY4Qpl74Q?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Bruce was immediately taken with the song, and it didn&#8217;t take long for him to adapt it for his band, forgoing the original reggae arrangement in favor of a simmering, slow build of a rocker.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce also made changes to the lyrics, both subtle and significant.<\/p>\n<p>The original version told the story of the oppressed railing against the oppressor. It was clearly a protest song, but it could be read as either a personal or political one. Cliff probably intended it that way, and that&#8217;s undoubtedly part of what drew Bruce to it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Well it seems like I&#8217;ve fallen in your trap again<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And it seems like I&#8217;ll be wearing the same old pain<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But good must conquer evil and truth will set me free<\/em><br \/>\n<em>So you see that somewhere I have found the key<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes you see that somewhere I have found the key<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Well it seems like I&#8217;ve been sleeping in your bed too long<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And it seems like you&#8217;ve been planning to do me wrong<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But evil concentrated must be disintegrated<\/em><br \/>\n<em>So I know that I&#8217;ll be walking out again<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes I know that I&#8217;ll be walking out again<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Well it seems like I have played the game your way too long<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And it seems the game I&#8217;ve played has made you strong<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But when this game is over, I won&#8217;t end up the loser<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And I know that I&#8217;ll be walking out again<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes I know that I&#8217;ll be walking out again<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Notice that In Jimmy&#8217;s original, the protagonist has already found his means of escape:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>So you see that somewhere I have found the key<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes you see that somewhere I have found the key<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But in Bruce&#8217;s version, while still optimistic, the hero is still very much trapped:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>And I know someday I&#8217;ll find the key<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And I know somewhere I will find the key<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bruce also changed the line &#8220;evil concentrated must be disintegrated&#8221; to &#8220;I&#8217;ll teach my eyes to seen beyond these walls in front of me,&#8221; again shifting the song&#8217;s message from one of imminent escape to still-very-much-stuck.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with the slow build and powerful, explosive chorus, Bruce&#8217;s &#8220;Trapped&#8221; conveys a blend of seething anger and obstinate determination missing from the more optimistic original.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce debuted the song at the opening show of a six-night stand at Wembley Arena in London. Bruce was carrying some personal baggage from previous shows there, and debuting an obscure cover in a new, untried arrangement was a bold move&#8211;but it worked, fabulously so. Here&#8217;s that debut performance, from <a href=\"http:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/29\/kingdom-of-days-may-29\/\">May 29<\/a>, 1981:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RpGVwh0NkY4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Trapped&#8221; remained in the set throughout the rest of the tour and was a prominent staple of the Born in the USA Tour as well, and World Tour 1992-93, the Reunion Tour&#8230; in fact, it&#8217;s easier to list the tours it\u00a0<em>hasn&#8217;t\u00a0<\/em>been played at (Tunnel of Love, the acoustic tours, and Seeger Sessions are the notable exceptions).<\/p>\n<p>When Bruce performed the song at the Meadowlands on the BITUSA Tour, the performance was recorded and released on the benefit album\u00a0<em>We Are the World,\u00a0<\/em>rising all the way to the top of the Billboard Rock chart despite never being released as a single.
