The only problem is the recording: while it&#8217;s clear enough to make out most of Bruce&#8217;s important lyrics, the guitar jams completely drown out the vocals at times, leaving us with an incomplete document of Bruce&#8217;s 1970 original song.<\/p>\n<p>But like I said, this is still a fun song, so let&#8217;s take a listen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"v-iseNgxgd-1\" class=\"video-player\"><iframe title='VideoPress Video Player' aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='758' height='568' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/iseNgxgd?hd=1&amp;cover=1&amp;loop=0&amp;autoPlay=0&amp;permalink=1&amp;muted=0&amp;controls=1&amp;playsinline=0&amp;useAverageColor=0&amp;preloadContent=metadata' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen data-resize-to-parent=\"true\" allow='clipboard-write; presentation'><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Temporarily Out of Order&#8221; takes the once-ubiquitous but dreaded sign that used to adorn malfunctioning payphones, laundry machines and the like, and it applies it to the narrator&#8217;s doomed relationship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Well I called my baby the other day<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah this is just what went down<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I said &#8220;You remember our Friday night date, don&#8217;t ya?&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She said &#8220;sure, yeah, sure I do&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But come Friday, no, she was nowhere to be found<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I&#8217;m ???<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m watchin&#8217; the late late show<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ve tried so hard but can&#8217;t sleep<\/em><br \/>\n<em>???<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wait a minute, I&#8217;m gonna call her on the telephone<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m gonna find out that she wasn&#8217;t home<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Temporarily out of order<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yeah that&#8217;s what the operator said now<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Temporarily out of order<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It&#8217;s alright, don&#8217;t worry about it<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Poor guy: his girl ghosted him before ghosting was a thing. And while the operator&#8217;s message applies literally to his girlfriend&#8217;s phone number, Bruce implies that it refers to the romance too, and even the narrator himself, as he complains in the song&#8217;s coda:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Temporarily out of order<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That&#8217;s the only thing I hear<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Temporarily out of order<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Now there&#8217;s a buzzer pumpin&#8217; in my ear<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Temporarily out of order<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I guess I am temporarily out of order<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While only one performance of &#8220;Temporarily Out of Order&#8221; is definitively documented (the muddy one above), given the scarcity of recordings and set lists from that era, it&#8217;s likely the band performed it at least a few times in early 1970.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s keep our fingers crossed for a cleaner, clearer recording someday&#8211;it may not be one of Bruce&#8217;s deepest early songs, but it&#8217;s got a self-deprecating &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/05\/roll-of-the-dice-im-goin-down\/\">I&#8217;m Goin&#8217; Down<\/a>&#8221; charm that makes it worth a listen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Temporarily Out of Order<br \/>\nNever recorded<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Never released<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>First performed:<\/strong> May 23, 1970 (Richmond, VA)<br \/>\n<strong>Last performed:<\/strong> May 23, 1970 (Richmond, VA)<\/p>\n<p>Looking for your favorite Bruce song?
