{"id":26516,"date":"2021-04-15T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/?p=26516"},"modified":"2023-01-02T17:46:56","modified_gmt":"2023-01-03T01:46:56","slug":"roll-of-the-dice-leavin-train","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/15\/roll-of-the-dice-leavin-train\/","title":{"rendered":"Roll of the Dice: Leavin&#8217; Train"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For any other artist, &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; might earn a more favorable review.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, it&#8217;s not like it&#8217;s a bad song.<\/p>\n<p>Musically, it&#8217;s built around a great guitar riff, riding a chugging chassis that sounds for all the world like a barreling train; lyrically, it has a great central metaphor&#8211;the notion that one&#8217;s eyes might reveal one&#8217;s emotional departure long before their physical one is brilliant.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/agtJ2_ztgNo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The problem with &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; is that its songwriter <em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> any other artist, and there&#8217;s nothing in this song that Bruce hasn&#8217;t done better elsewhere in his catalog.<\/p>\n<p>Want a hard-drivin&#8217; train song with a killer guitar solo? Look to <a href=\"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/14\/roll-of-the-dice-burnin-train\/\">&#8220;Burnin&#8217; Train.<\/a>&#8221; (The apostrophe is apparently a required ingredient in this micro-genre.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tTwpR6SCyRw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Want a song that will wrench your heart and fill your soul with dread over the surety of impending but unconfirmed betrayal? Seek out &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/06\/roll-of-the-dice-brilliant-disguise\/\">Brilliant Disguise.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/idnJnjV_8rg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>In fact, &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; is basically a re-write of &#8220;Brilliant Disguise,&#8221; but with less nuance and artfulness.<\/p>\n<p>Which is odd, considering that &#8220;Brilliant Disguise was only a couple of years old when Bruce recorded &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; in early 1990. (I suspect the latter song had its genesis during the <em>Tunnel of Love<\/em> period, though.) Why take another swing (and so soon) after hitting a home run on the first pitch?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just the thematic similarity&#8211;there are lyrical echoes of &#8220;Brilliant Disguise&#8221; throughout &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; starting from the very first lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Baby when I ask you if everything is alright<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You whisper &#8220;Don&#8217;t worry&#8221; and you shut out the light<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Well now black is black in this bed we&#8217;re laying<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yeah and I wanna believe the words yeah that your lips are saying<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Compare the first couplet above with this key passage in &#8220;Brilliant Disguise&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Now look at me baby, struggling to do everything right<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And then it all falls apart oh when out go the lights<\/em><\/p>\n<p>See what I mean? And it continues from there. Compare the third line with:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Tonight our bed is cold, I&#8217;m lost in the darkness of our love<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now I will admit that the notion of a departing train is much more specific and evocative metaphor than a generic disguise (however brilliant), but Bruce fumbles the follow-through:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Whoa but your eyes look like a leavin&#8217; train<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yeah they keep on dragging me down<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Your eyes look like a leavin&#8217; train<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They keep on draggin&#8217;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They keep on draggin&#8217;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They keep on draggin&#8217; me down<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Since when do trains drag\u00a0<em>down<\/em>? I&#8217;m not sure what exactly I would have used here instead (I&#8217;m no songwriter), but &#8220;leavin&#8217; train&#8221; and &#8220;draggin&#8217; down&#8221; don&#8217;t really work together. One implies abandonment and the other imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose we could just ignore the train metaphor altogether and simply focus on the narrator being dragged down by his lover&#8217;s eyes. That conceit works nicely. So much so, in fact, that Bruce had a Top Ten hit with it in 1985:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Well lately when I look into your eyes<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m going down, down, down, down<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; adds nothing original to Bruce&#8217;s catalog.\u00a0 The second verse again retreads &#8220;Brilliant Disguise&#8221; territory:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Well I did anything just to try to get close to you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I took it step by step yeah like a man&#8217;s supposed to<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Tell me now, is this my, baby, is this my contrition<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To have the love that I longed for fill me with suspicion<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the last verse is lackluster even without comparison:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>So now it&#8217;s tellin&#8217; time, oh my little sister<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Now can I believe the words, the words of love you whisper<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Is my train in vain, oh has my soul gone to waste<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Am I just a victim of, a victim of my lost faith<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Train in vain?<\/em>\u00a0 When did the train become the narrator&#8217;s? And what&#8217;s the point of establishing a secondary use of the metaphor but doing absolutely nothing with it besides an easy internal rhyme? And why reach for a lone internal rhyme but go lazy on the external ones? It almost sounds like Bruce just lost interest in the song at this point.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, though, the last five lines of &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train'&#8221; cannot hold a candle to the devastating&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>God have mercy on the man who doubts what he&#8217;s sure of<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;even though they&#8217;re conveying the exact same thing.<\/p>\n<p>So yeah, Bruce made a wise move relegating &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; to outtake status (at least until he released it in 1998 on <em>Tracks<\/em>), of interest only to ZZ Top fans who are curious to hear what that band&#8217;s material might sound like in Bruce&#8217;s hands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; is a song I never would have expected Bruce\u00a0 to break out in concert, but surprisingly he did: twice in fact, with Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers on back-to-back nights in Pittsburgh in the spring of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Both performances were a little rough at times, but both were redeemed by smoking guitar jams, particularly on Night Two.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XnXFqQmSAT0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Will we ever hear from &#8220;Leavin&#8217; Train&#8221; again?<\/p>\n<p>I suspect not.
