{"id":26078,"date":"2021-03-31T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/?p=26078"},"modified":"2021-03-31T05:06:35","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T12:06:35","slug":"roll-of-the-dice-i-am-the-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/31\/roll-of-the-dice-i-am-the-doctor\/","title":{"rendered":"Roll of the Dice: I Am the Doctor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Steel Mill was known for its heavy sound, pointed lyrics, and extended\u00a0 guitar jams.<\/p>\n<p>But there were exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point: &#8220;I Am the Doctor,&#8221; an original Springsteen composition that Steel Mill played during the first half of 1970.<\/p>\n<div id=\"v-iPprCrUj-1\" class=\"video-player\"><iframe title='VideoPress Video Player' aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='758' height='568' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/iPprCrUj?hd=1&amp;cover=1&amp;loop=0&amp;autoPlay=0&amp;permalink=1&amp;muted=0&amp;controls=1&amp;playsinline=0&amp;useAverageColor=0&amp;preloadContent=metadata' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen data-resize-to-parent=\"true\" allow='clipboard-write; presentation'><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I Am the Doctor&#8221; is as light as Steel Mill gets; it certainly won&#8217;t make anyone&#8217;s list of best Springsteen lyrics. But then, it doesn&#8217;t need to. &#8220;I Am the Doctor&#8221; was a mid-set palate cleanser for the band.<\/p>\n<p>Bookended by an &#8220;I&#8217;ll do anything for you&#8221; framing sequence that showed off the band&#8217;s harmonies, the heart of the song is an extended slow jam in which a 20-year-old Bruce Springsteen gets to stretch his frontman muscles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>If I can make you happy<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If I can make you smile<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If I can make you feel good<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Just for a while<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;d wiggle my ears and stand on my head<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Forget about your worries and don&#8217;t sulk-as long as I can play<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If I can turn your teardrops into a laugh<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Make you forget about the hard times, forget the past<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Do anything that you want me to<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Forget about your worries and don&#8217;t sulk, it&#8217;s alright for you&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Well you&#8217;re screaming and bitching about the hard times that you&#8217;ve had<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You say that a day don&#8217;t go by your luck don&#8217;t turn bad<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You show me all the things you bought with money that you never had<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And you&#8217;re feeling kinda sorry now and looking kinda sad<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A backache or a earache or too much LSD<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Well I am the Doctor, won&#8217;t you call me, call on me<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Now I am the Doctor, come on call, I&#8217;ll make you sing<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the mid-song passage below, we can hear early evidence of Bruce&#8217;s sense of humor and his growing ease with semi-improvisational musical patter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>If you got a backache, or an earache, or a headache<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Or a toothache, or a bellyache, or any ache<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If you broke your arm, got a burned down bar<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Your car smashed, you got whiplashed, your lover&#8217;s gone, or you&#8217;re all alone<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Or you broke your bones, or you&#8217;re a little bit too stoned<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Well I am the Doctor, won&#8217;t you come on and see me<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I am the Doctor, one hundred percent guaranteed<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Well I can cure nearly all of your miseries<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But you gotta take it easy&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(At this point, Bruce slips into one of his earliest mid-song stories, but maddeningly the recording is too distant for us to clearly hear it. If you can understand and transcribe it, I&#8217;d be much obliged&#8211;all I can tell is that it has something to do with surfboards.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Well I am the Doctor, won&#8217;t you come on and see me<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I am the Doctor, one hundred percent guaranteed<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I can cure nearly all of your miseries<\/em><br \/>\n<em>All you gotta do, I won&#8217;t charge you no mammoth fee<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Just come on over to my office for free<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I Am the Doctor&#8221; wouldn&#8217;t make Steel Mill&#8217;s greatest hits, but it ably served its purpose in concert.
