When it comes to wearing one&#8217;s influence on one&#8217;s sleeve, &#8220;Outside Looking In&#8221; is the equivalent of a &#8220;Peggy Sue&#8221; tattoo.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ev4XO_RCAag?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s more than just Max Weinberg&#8217;s rumbling percussion; even the chord progression of Bruce&#8217;s 1977\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2022\/07\/05\/album-companion-darkness-on-the-edge-of-town\/\"><em>Darkness on the Edge of Town<\/em><\/a> outtake\u00a0is modeled after Buddy Holly&#8217;s 1957 classic. It&#8217;s not much of a stretch to argue that &#8220;Outside Looking In&#8221; is basically built on Peggy Sue&#8217;s chassis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OUesbTObC9A?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The irony of &#8220;Outside Looking In,&#8221; however, is that content-wise it&#8217;s the inverse of &#8220;Peggy Sue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Peggy Sue&#8221; is a doe-eyed, devotional mash note of a song; &#8220;Outside Looking In&#8221;&#8230; well, let&#8217;s just say the narrator&#8217;s girl left him feeling a different kind of blue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>It&#8217;s all over now, the things we had<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I ain&#8217;t sorry, girl, I just feel mad<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You walk real pretty and you talk real fine<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But night after night babe I&#8217;m on the line<\/em><br \/>\n<em>My life&#8217;s the same story, again and again<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m on the outside looking in<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Well every day just brings the same<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You go out looking for some strange new games<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Pretty soon them games ain&#8217;t fun anymore<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And it&#8217;s something else that you&#8217;re looking for<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You&#8217;ve got all the answers, you and your friends<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And I&#8217;m on the outside looking in<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Now you&#8217;ve got the pretty things you want<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The sins of the angels baby they will haunt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Those pretty eyes that they all adore<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But baby not me, not anymore<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I do what I want to,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ll be what I am<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m on the outside looking in<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now if you&#8217;re a romantic, feel free to interpret Bruce&#8217;s lyrics as giving up on an emotionally distant girl who refuses to let her guard down. It&#8217;s certainly possible to read the song that way.<\/p>\n<p>But to me, both the lyrics and vocals of &#8220;Outside Looking In&#8221; portray a sexually frustrated player who feels strung along and has lost all patience.<\/p>\n<p>Both interpretations might be true.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing that&#8217;s crystal clear is that our narrator has had enough of trying to make this relationship work. He&#8217;s walking away from it with his head held high, even though he suspects he&#8217;s the one who&#8217;s been played.<\/p>\n<p>(An earlier take of the song included a verse that makes the narrator appear a bit vulnerable, but it also made him appear a bit of a victim.
