{"id":24474,"date":"1988-04-07T11:00:00","date_gmt":"1988-04-07T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/?p=24474"},"modified":"2026-02-08T08:18:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T16:18:14","slug":"matr-john-mellancamp-and-bruce-springsteen-pink-houses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/1988\/04\/07\/matr-john-mellancamp-and-bruce-springsteen-pink-houses\/","title":{"rendered":"Pink Houses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I reckon every songwriter has a list of songs they wish they&#8217;d written, and\u00a0I have to imagine that &#8220;Pink Houses&#8221; is on Bruce&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qOfkpu6749w?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>John Mellencamp&#8217;s 1983 single (it peaked at #8 in early 1984) has a lot in common with Bruce&#8217;s material at the time. For one thing, it was famously misinterpreted. With an anthemic backing track and a rousing chorus, it&#8217;s easy to overlook the song&#8217;s critical lyrics, which scold America for not being accountable to its ideals.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, while President Reagan was latching onto Bruce&#8217;s &#8220;Born in the U.S.A.&#8221; during his 1984 reelection campaign, he was also playing &#8220;Pink Houses&#8221; at his campaign stops.\u00a0 &#8220;Pink Houses&#8221; has been co-opted by conservative politicians and causes ever since its release; its very liberal author had to ask candidates Reagan, Bush, and McCain to kindly cease and desist.<\/p>\n<p>Today, &#8220;Pink Houses&#8221; is considered one of Mellencamp&#8217;s greatest songs, and\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em> has enshrined it as #447 on its Greatest Songs of All-Time list.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, even though Bruce and John have shared a stage together a few times over the years, they never teamed up on the most likely candidate from John&#8217;s catalog.<\/p>\n<p>Not until 2019, at least. At the 1980s-themed\u00a0 benefit concert for The Rainforest Foundation, Bruce and John finally found their moment. During Mellencamp&#8217;s set that evening, he invited a special guest to join him on stage&#8211;and what followed was the first and only team-up to date between Bruce and John on one of their own songs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RGFyXuTCgDM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>John returned the favor shortly after, which left them tied at one each.
