{"id":24149,"date":"2020-12-30T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-30T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/?p=24149"},"modified":"2020-12-29T19:38:05","modified_gmt":"2020-12-30T03:38:05","slug":"cover-me-mad-staring-eyes-open-all-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/30\/cover-me-mad-staring-eyes-open-all-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Cover Me, Mad Staring Eyes: Open All Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2012, Trevor Moss assembled a group of UK artists to mark the 30th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen&#8217;s landmark album, <em>Nebraska.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Nebraska Sessions<\/em> is neither the first nor the last project to pay tribute to Bruce&#8217;s famous 1982 solo project, but it may be the only one recorded the same way Bruce did: on a TEAC Tacsam four-track cassette recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Each track was interpreted and performed by a different artist or band, and in a nod to more modern times, Moss captured each performance on video as well.<\/p>\n<p>The entire album is worth listening to, but my favorite track by far is the daring reinvention of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/2020\/10\/28\/roll-of-the-dice-open-all-night\/\">Open All Night<\/a>&#8221; by Mad Staring Eyes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/98pXrIfgyno?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Mad Staring Eyes was a six-piece folk combo out of North London that counted Bruce among their influences. (They don&#8217;t seem to be active any more, although I&#8217;d be happy to be corrected if they are.)<\/p>\n<p>Their shuffling take on &#8220;Open All Night&#8221; would have been a perfect arrangement for the Seeger Sessions Tour, had Bruce not gone a completely different direction with his own re-imagining of the song.<\/p>\n<p>Their entire performance is great, but for me the highlight is the rocking flute solo(!), very likely inspired by Canned Heat. Who would have thought &#8220;Going Up the Country&#8221; would graft well onto &#8220;Open All Night?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recorded the same way as Bruce&#8217;s original, this daring interpretation of &#8220;Open All Night&#8221;
