Bowen on vocals, and Bruce on guitar:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"758\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pbByblT-ejY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Written and recorded in the early 1980s, &#8220;Savin&#8217; Up&#8221; is an early warning against the obsession with excess and success that was beginning to characterize the decade, with straightforward lyrics and an infectious hook.<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics are an admonishment to a material girl to &#8216;start savin&#8217; up for the things that money can&#8217;t buy.&#8221; The lyrics and imagery are so direct that you&#8217;d be forgiven for thinking this is Bruce&#8217;s answer to Madonna&#8217;s famous hit, except that &#8220;Material Girl&#8221; came out a year later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>You may have diamonds, you may have pearls<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You may think you got it baby over all the other girls<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But honey you ain&#8217;t got nothing, and I&#8217;ll tell you why<\/em><br \/>\n<em>If you&#8217;re empty as a soul can be, baby, deep down inside<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>You better start savin&#8217; up for the things that money can&#8217;t buy<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>You may have a big backyard, and ruby rings<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And my love&#8217;s just a second-place runner, honey, to your fancy things<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But what you got to hold on to when the lights go down<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You come lookin&#8217; for me baby, but I ain&#8217;t nowhere around<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>You better start savin&#8217; up for the things that money can&#8217;t buy<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The final verse takes a tender turn, making it clear that the narrator isn&#8217;t bitter or spurned but rather making his case to the girl he still loves:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>You need a strong man, baby, to love and understand you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A man who ain&#8217;t afraid, sugar, to get some dirt on his hands for you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And when you&#8217;re feeling so down-hearted and all you wanna do is cry<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah, just come on, take my hand, baby, together you and I<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bruce has performed &#8220;Savin&#8217; Up&#8221; nine times in concert, all but one during the past decade.
