{"id":18471,"date":"1984-01-30T11:00:00","date_gmt":"1984-01-30T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/?p=18471"},"modified":"2026-03-14T15:17:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T22:17:15","slug":"cover-me-bimbo-du-jour-no-surrender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/estreetshuffle.com\/index.php\/1984\/01\/30\/cover-me-bimbo-du-jour-no-surrender\/","title":{"rendered":"Bimbo du Jour: No Surrender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deep down, we always knew that &#8220;No Surrender&#8221; was secretly punk, didn&#8217;t we?<\/p>\n<p>Bimbo du Jour sure did.<\/p>\n<p>I wish I knew more about this band other than that they had two albums back in the nineties, they don&#8217;t appear to have issued anything since, their debut album includes a punk treatment of Goffin and King&#8217;s &#8220;Will You Love Me Tomorrow&#8221;\u00a0 which works way better than it should, and their awesomely crunchy cover of &#8220;No Surrender&#8221; comes from their <em>Six Ways From Sunday<\/em> album, which you can stream on your favorite platforms.<\/p>\n<p>But even if I did know the band&#8217;s full story, I probably couldn&#8217;t summarize their sound better than the album&#8217;s official description:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[P]ut Blondie, a little Clash and Pistols, a pinch of Bush and a dash of Gwen into an El Nino blender, add single malt scotch, turn it on 11 and record the results.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yep, that pretty much captures it. Jour&#8217;s cover of &#8220;No Surrender&#8221; might have been under the radar at the time, but it <em>almost<\/em> of made the cut for <em>One Step Up\/Two Steps Back: The Songs of Bruce Springsteen<\/em>, a 1998 tribute album with some standout covers.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the best tracks from that project turned out to be outtakes, released on an EP called <em>Downbound Train<\/em> that was so under the radar, you needed sonar to spot it.\u00a0 Luckily, I did.<\/p>\n<div class=\"a-row a-expander-container a-expander-extend-container\" aria-live=\"polite\"
