Ah, summer.

Everyone has their seasonal traditions. For me, this is the time of year when I break out my old Bruce Springsteen Band recordings and set the wayback machine for the summer of 1971.

At summer’s outset, Bruce Springsteen was 21 years old, a full year away from signing his first record deal, and (as they say) between gigs.

He’d disbanded guitar-heavy Steel Mill in January and spent the remainder of the winter making guest appearances and jamming at The Upstage in Asbury Park. As winter gave way to spring, Bruce tried out a few different band configurations, but the Friendly Enemies, the Red Hot Mammas, and Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom all failed to click.

Springsteen had a vision for his next band, however, and each of those blink-and-miss-it bands captured at least one element of the bigger, brassier, bluesier sound he sought. He finally found it in a band he formed in June, debuted in July, and named after himself.

The Bruce Springsteen Band made its first appearance the weekend after July 4th at the Jersey Shore and took up residence at the Student Prince that autumn.  They rarely left the Asbury Park vicinity, but they did make a handful of appearances in Richmond, Virginia, where Bruce had cultivated his strongest following outside of New Jersey with Steel Mill.

Springsteen’s Richmond setlists often contained a few familiar Steel Mill chestnuts to satisfy his loyal fans, but the rest of the set usually consisted of blues covers and bright, almost poppy original songs. We’ve listened to almost all of them together over the last seven years (if you’ve been with me that long), but there’s one notable original Springsteen song from that era we’ve so far only glanced at.

Bruce wrote “Talking About My Baby” for the Bruce Springsteen Band, but to the best of our knowledge (documentation of the BSB era is spotty at best), he only performed it once–in Richmond on Halloween eve.

Bruce has long lifted his song titles from popular music and films, but in this case he borrowed more than a title. His version of “Talking About My Baby” is essentially a re-write of Curtis Mayfield’s 1964 hit single. The melody and lyrics are all Bruce’s, but its theme is as direct an homage as its title.

Musically, Springsteen took a completely different path than Mayfield, opting for a quiet, contemplatively worshipful arrangement rather than the bouncy, carefree paean of the original.

Lyrically, he made his baby a femme fatale–ultimately no more substantial than Mayfield’s off-screen love interest but with a world-weary wariness and aloofness that gives her the upper hand in the relationship. Right from the start, we sense that Bruce’s narrator is never truly sure whether she is, in fact, his baby. (Best line of the song: I can tell when she’s mad, because she smiles)

She’s cool, she’s the only girl that played me for a fool
And she’s tough, and when she loves me, don’t you know she loves me rough
She comes on fast, she plays the game hard
She once told me nothing ever lasts
I said, “But look at you, baby
Can’t you see that you’re battle-scarred?”

“Talking About My Baby” is a terrific song, suited and arranged perfectly for Springsteen’s new band. So why did it disappear so quickly? We may never know. (I doubt Bruce would even remember the song if we asked him about it.) But musically, at least, its legacy lives on.

Some months after that one-and-only documented performance of “Talking About My Baby,” Bruce lifted and adapted his melody for a new song called “Janey Needs a Shooter.” You can hear it most obviously in the opening couplets of the latter song’s verses.

Bruce recorded “Janey” in the early days of 1973, and it was a candidate for inclusion on his next four albums. By the time he finally abandoned it, the song had evolved from its original acoustic form into a heavier full-band arrangement. For years, it was considered one of his lost classics, with rehearsals and outtakes circulating amongst collectors.

And then of course, in late 2020, we were finally gifted with a modern, completed version of “Janey Needs a Shooter.” And if we listen to it, we can clearly hear the strains of the Bruce Springsteen Band’s original one-time wonder, almost a half-century later.

  1. is the thumbnail image ai generated? if so im mighty disapointed. i dislike ai immensely and it creates a certain distrust for me when i see it used. i hope you avoid ai in the future

    1. Hi William, yes it is AI-generated. I think it’s my first time using it on the site, although I might have used it once before, I can’t recall. Anyway, I’m curious to know why the distrust? Seems like a great tool for a non-artist to generate artwork!

  2. i mean this with no offense towrds you, but i view all ai generated matierial as utter crap, meant to decieve. I always find some sort of error with the generated work, the kind of thing that is obviusly not human error, but rather a mishmash, the concepts the ai is attemoting to make into an image but instead gets smushed together in an ugly attrocity. i really hate ai genereated content.

    1. I get it. I probably will still use it from time to time out of laziness, to be completely candid though. I am not an artist, and sometimes it’s hard to find appropriate cover art for an article on the internet. My focus is always on the writing rather than the illustration. I’ll try to keep it to a minimum. Thanks for the feedback!
