New for 2024: Article for 2009
1972: The Bruce Springsteen Band opens a nine-show stand at The Back Door in Richmond, where the band will play for much of the month. Listen to their set below.
1973: Bruce and the as-yet-unnamed E Street Band play their fifth of six nights at Max’s Kansas City in New York, both opening and closing for headliner Biff Rose.
1981: Bruce and the band play Southern Illinois University in Carbondale along the original River Tour.
1991: Bruce and Patti attend the opening night of Sting’s stand at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. Entertainment Tonight catches a brief glimpse of the pair (not yet married) during their segment covering the show.
1997: Bruce plays his first ever Australian solo acoustic show at the QPAC Concert Hall in Brisbane.
2009: Working on a Dream debuts at #1 on the Billboard album chart, bumping defending champion Taylor Swift.
2016: The River Tour (2016 version) stops at TD Garden in Boston, where “Roulette” makes its tour debut and Peter Wolf joins for the closing “Shout.”
2017: On Night Two in Melbourne, Bruce continues to make subtle political statements by opening with “American Land.” Surprisingly (given how many times he’s played it) and comically, Bruce completely spaces on how to start “Waitin’ on a Sunny Day.” He and Steve spend about two minutes repeatedly trying to figure it out before the crowd finally takes matters into their own hands. Also making their tour debut tonight: “Sherry Darling,” “This Hard Land,” “and Cadillac Ranch.”
“Mama! It helps if you have a little Italian in you.”–Bruce’s closing comments to “The Wish” (Brisbane, 2.4.17) (Thanks, Mrs. Springsteen.)
