The first time I ever heard “This Little Girl,” I was twelve.

My dad had the song on a 45 single, and he played that thing to death. He loved that song, and I loved it too–but I remember thinking to myself the first time I heard it: this sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song. It’s the earliest memory I have of recognizing an artist’s style in a recording credited to someone else.

I’ve already written about “Your Love” and “Dedication,” the other two songs Bruce wrote for Gary U.S. Bonds’ third album, so feel free to read those essays for backstory between Bruce and Gary. “This Little Girl” rounds out the set, and it was the biggest commercial success of all of them, peaking at #11 on the pop chart and #5 on the rock chart.

It’s also the only one of the three Bruce-penned songs on which you can actually and clearly hear Bruce singing and playing (along with the rest of the E Street Band). Hence my difficulty in knowing how to classify it: it’s an original, a cover, and a team-up all at the same time.

Musically, “This Little Girl” is clearly in Bonds’ wheelhouse: it has the same beat and syncopated hand claps of “Quarter to Three,” Bonds’ biggest hit, and it seems clearly designed to evoke associations with it while re-introducing Bonds to a new audience.

There’s some debate about how and when Bruce actually wrote it. Some sources attribute it to the group of songs written for The River; Bonds himself claims that Bruce called him up late one night claiming he’d just written it for him. Both could be true, I suppose.

My suspicion: Bruce had already been playing around with the sound of “This Little Girl,” so it was a song waiting to be written. With the benefit of hindsight (and a retroactive boxset of outtakes) we now know that Bruce had a song called “Ain’t Good Enough for You” that was written and recorded during the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions, but Bruce locked it away in the vault when he realized it didn’t match the tone of the album he was putting together.

Whether Bruce deliberately borrowed his own riff or whether he’d forgotten all about his earlier song, the similarities between “Ain’t Good Enough for You” and “This Little Girl” are too significant to ignore and easy enough to reconcile: Bruce had long acknowledged Gary as one of his influences, and “Quarter to Three” had long been one of his standard and favorite encores. So he almost certainly had been trying to recreate its style while fashioning something of his own.

The opportunity to write for Bonds himself must have catalyzed him, and the result was one of Bruce’s all-time best pop confections.

Lyrically, though, “This Little Girl” would be borderline inappropriate if released today. At best, it’s a celebration of machismo, at worst it’s the epitome of what earned Bruce early criticism that he infantilized women.

In fact, when I was twelve and first heard the song, I was positive the song was about an overprotective father and his daughter. And in fairness, you can get about halfway through the song before I’d lose that argument, and even then, it’s only one line that causes the problem. Read the lyrics through that lens and see how it almost works:

So yeah, it’s maybe a little embarrassing that I thought Bonds was singing about his daughter, so I won’t bother sharing just how old I was before I figured out otherwise.

“This Little Girl” works great in concert–so much so that it’s always surprised me that Bruce didn’t play it more often. In the early years, perhaps he was content to let Bonds reap the benefit, as he did during this 1981 show at the Capitol Theater in Passaic:

Whenever Bruce did play it on stage, it was because Bonds was right there next to him. Here’s the earliest recording of the two of them performing “This Little Girl” live, from The River Tour.

In fact, the only time I’m aware of that Bruce played the song without Bonds is at Light of Day 2015. This was also the last time Bruce played “This Little Girl” to date.

At this point in my Bruce concert career, I don’t have a lot left on my chase list, but “This Little Girl” is pretty close to the top of it. I wish I’d kept that 45…
